Finance Director / CFO, North America

The North America Finance Director / Chief Financial Officer (FD/CFO) is a pivotal member of the global Digital Science Metrics leadership team and plays a critical role in driving the achievement of our mission, and assumes a strategic role in the overall management of the company.  This is a hands-on finance role. As the first point of contact for all finance related questions, you will be responsible for following through and finding solutions. The FD/CFO will also be responsible for directing operational and financial management encompassing accounting, finance, forecasting, strategic planning, deal analysis and negotiations.  The FD/CFO will be actively building and shaping systems, practices, and approaches.

The FD/CFO will work closely with the CEO and Executive Management Team on day-to-day operational, strategic and financial issues and will be responsible for overall company performance and effectiveness.  Additionally, the FD/CFO will need to help support the requirements of the corporate group.

Key Focus Areas for this opportunity

Financial Planning; Lead and work with group budget holders to implement consistent forecasts, budgets, and targets across the groups, and process the roll-up of this information for consolidated reporting, including elimination of intra/inter-company revenue and duplicate counting of resources.

Operations; Implement financial operations and reporting best practices for global groups. As global process owner for inter-company invoicing, accounts receivables, accounts payable, expenses, billing (bookkeepers), monitor/ report on accounts receivable cycles across the group and establish process of credit control, and monitor cash balances and cash forecasts.

Financial Information / Funding; Oversee the issuance and reporting of financial information to the management team, board, and investors. Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts. Support Investment management (e.g. financing rounds, new investments, acquisition due diligence).

Risk Management; Identify, analyze and report any risk issues to the executive team and CFO including but not limited to insurance coverages, record keeping, and treasury/bank processes (limits, corporate credit, etc.).

Leadership; Represent the company as needed on financial matters. Provide training and updates of new functionalities. Maintain relationships with external bookkeepers, including on-boarding, keeping record of relationships (engagement letters, SoW), and ensuring Digital Science receives service as expected by monitoring and improving quality where and when necessary.

Transactions; Support a system of controls over accounting transactions. Monitor/report accounts payables and receivables, and support periodic reconciliations. Review payroll and ensure it is entered into finance system properly.

Reporting; Coordinate and support the preparation of financial statements and annual reporting in line with group requirements; ensure timely and accurate submission of all required Year-end reporting (IFRS group reporting packages) and financial statements. Other reporting responsibilities:

  • Identify and suggest benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide financial analyses as needed
  • Prepare monthly management report including meaningful variance analysis and commentary, incl. a system of management cost reports
  • Help to develop, generate, and report performance measures that support the company's strategic direction

Compliance; Ensure compliance with group accounting and treasury guidelines as well as local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings. Ensure compliant processes are in place and establish where necessary. Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, including any transfer pricing and permanent establishment related and requirements. Other compliance responsibilities:

  • Monitor debt levels across groups and drawdown levels on investments
  • Keep close relationship to Holtzbrinck Publishing Group and other commonly owned group with all tax related matters
  • Coordinate year-end and ad-hoc audits with Holtzbrinck Publishing Group and external auditors, including coordinating the provision of information

Required Experience

  • Experience in a Finance Director, CFO, or Senior Level Finance role
  • Experience working with an entrepreneurial team
  • Financial acumen incorporating accurate forecasting, budgeting and the effective communication of financial and strategic goals to senior management.
  • Exceptional track record in partnering with business teams to drive results.
  • Board and investor relations experience.
  • Strong communication skills and experience with presentations to executive team members, the Board, and investors.
  • Experience implementing or using sophisticated accounting control systems such as SAP, or Netsuite, and employing best practices for using them
  • Experience with financial analysis including cash forecasting, cost accounting, profitability, use of proceeds and the related return on investment and other similar matters.
  • Experience developing tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and board and making actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations
  • Experience advising on issues, trends, and changes in the operating models
